Duties and Responsibilities of the Welfare Affairs Standing Committee

The Welfare Affairs Standing Committee is the principal committee responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising activities in areas such as social welfare, poverty alleviation, social security, women and child welfare, and the welfare of disadvantaged sections of society in the Grama Panchayat.

Major Duties:

• Provide leadership in the planning and implementation of various social welfare programmes of the Panchayat.
• Plan and coordinate programmes aimed at poverty alleviation.
• Take necessary measures to ensure that social security pensions and other welfare schemes reach eligible beneficiaries.
• Lead programmes aimed at ensuring the welfare and safety of women and children.
• Take necessary initiatives for the welfare of senior citizens, persons with disabilities, widows, destitute persons, and other vulnerable sections of society.
• Consider programmes aimed at the social and economic advancement of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other disadvantaged sections.
• Support the activities of Kudumbashree, self-help groups, women’s collectives, and similar community-based organisations.
• Coordinate welfare programmes that promote employment, self-employment, and livelihood opportunities.
• Consider programmes aimed at providing assistance to homeless families and economically disadvantaged households.
• Examine measures for identifying eligible beneficiaries and preparing beneficiary lists, and provide necessary recommendations.
• Monitor the progress of implementation of social welfare programmes and take necessary interventions.
• Consider complaints and suggestions received from the public regarding welfare services and take appropriate steps for their resolution.
• Coordinate welfare activities in cooperation with various Government departments, welfare agencies, and voluntary organisations.
• Provide leadership for activities aimed at ensuring social justice, equality, and public participation.
• Evaluate the progress of welfare activities of the Panchayat and submit necessary reports and recommendations to the Panchayat Committee.
